Frequently asked questions
The European Union (EU) abolished roaming charges for mobile phones on 15 June 2017. Since then, the same conditions apply to standard connections in the EU and the EEA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway as in the home country (= Roam like @ home).
- Calls to mobile networks are a special case. When abroad, no distinction is made between your own network and other mobile networks. The price for calls to other networks always applies.
- Incoming calls are free of charge within the EU.
- Travel & Surf passes can no longer be booked in the EU, as the data volume of the domestic tariff is charged. Once the data volume included in the tariff has been used up, SpeedOn passes can be booked, as in Germany.
- Tariffs with unlimited high-speed data volume have an upper limit for use abroad. The maximum data volume available abroad for your tariff is displayed at pass.telekom.de. Once you have reached the upper limit, you can book a reload pass there to continue using data roaming.
Cost control: With & Surf, you have full control over the costs of data usage abroad. Costs are only incurred when you book a paid pass. If you have opted for the default Travel & Surf option, your data connection abroad (worldwide) will be automatically terminated when your bill reaches €59.50 (gross) and again when it reaches €119 (gross). You will receive a text message allowing you to authorise further usage at a charge. Phone calls and text messages will continue to be possible regardless of this.
United Kingdom: The same conditions will continue to apply in the United Kingdom as in the EU, even after Brexit.
Switzerland: The same conditions apply in Switzerland as in the EU for the Basic Roaming and Standard Roaming options pre-selected in the current tariffs. In some very old tariffs, the Worldwide option is preset. In this case, Switzerland belongs to the (more expensive) country group 2. You
can find your booked roaming option on your mobile phone bill under "Your options". Alternatively, you can also check this the BSP Business Service Portal (BSP).

The Worldwide option is preset in some older tariffs. In the current Business Mobile tariffs, the Basic Roaming option is preset as the basic option (in data tariffs: Standard Roaming). The regulated conditions also apply here, additionally in Switzerland.
With the Worldwide option, you can roam in the EU (including Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway and the UK) under the conditions of the EU Roaming Regulation. This means that you use your domestic tariff without additional roaming costs. In all other countries, the prices according to the price list below apply.
In most older tariffs, the Worldwide option is already preset. If this is not the case, or if you have booked an alternative roaming option in the past, you can switch to the Worldwide option at any time in Telekom's Business Service Portal. Simply click on "Order now".

We have prepared an overview of Telekom's roaming partners for you to download:
Calls to value-added service numbers may incur additional charges when roaming. This also applies to numbers that can usually be called free of charge at home or in the country you are visiting, e.g. 0800/00800 numbers. Even numbers that are subject to statutory charges in your home country, e.g. 0180 numbers, may incur higher costs when calling from abroad. If specified, use the numbers provided by the companies for German hotlines for calls from abroad.
The voice quality and data transmission quality when using mobile communications abroad depends on the mobile network used in the respective country. In principle, the quality of the network visited corresponds to that of the Telekom mobile network in Germany if the same generation of mobile networks and technologies is available. The maximum data transmission speed offered abroad corresponds to that of the agreed tariff or data option in the home country, provided that this is supported by the mobile network used abroad and the device used. Data usage with a specific mobile technology requires corresponding agreements between the network operators involved.
When abroad, the use of older devices for roaming depends heavily on which mobile networks and standards are still available in the respective country. Many countries have already switched off their 3G networks or are planning to do so. Even the 2G network, which tends to remain in place longer in many countries, is being switched off and increasingly replaced by 4G and 5G.
If you travel to a country where neither 2G nor 3G are offered, an older device that only supports these networks will no longer be usable. It will then no longer be able to connect to the network, which means that you will no longer be reachable and will not be able to use mobile services.
More and more network operators worldwide are already relying on 4G/LTE and 5G as standard. Therefore, even when travelling abroad, it is advisable to use a device that is LTE-capable (including Voice over LTE/VoLTE) and specifically supports the LTE emergency call function.
