The application process varies depending on the funding programme and is usually a one- or two-stage process. As a rule, only planned projects that have not yet been started are eligible for funding. Companies applying for funding must also not be in the start-up phase or undergoing insolvency proceedings.
The maximum funding amount varies depending on the programme. Projects that have already received funding cannot be supported again. However, there are funding programmes that build on each other and subsidise, for example, consulting and subsequent implementation within a project. Overall, funding amounts in the six-figure range are possible.
In general, companies from all sectors are eligible for funding if they have locations in Germany. Funding is available for aspects such as process digitalisation, IT security, online marketing and software development. In addition to the type of project, other relevant factors include the financial framework and the size of the company.
The most significant programme in this area is the "Smart Cities Model Projects" funded by the BMI. The focus is on mobility (smart lighting, local public transport, electromobility, sustainable transport management, transport and logistics), climate protection (energy efficiency, renewable energies) and city-suburb partnerships.
The DigitalPakt Schule (Digital Pact for Schools) and funding programmes run by the federal states support schools in their digitalisation efforts. In technical terms, this means sufficient internet bandwidth and modern hardware such as school tablets and learning applications. At the same time, the rule is: "No equipment without a concept". Media development plans that combine technical infrastructure and new teaching concepts are mandatory.
The German government supports digitisation projects for companies of all sizes and the public sector with several thousand programmes. In recent years, funding has been significantly expanded in some cases and can reach six-figure sums per project. Nevertheless, many of the available funds remain unused. In particular, specialised, regional and smaller programmes are often not fully utilised. The reason for this is often their low profile. Surveys in the real estate industry have found that a third of companies are unaware of such financial support.
Conversely, companies repeatedly find that particularly well-known initiatives such as Digital Now or charging stations for electric vehicles to promote digitalisation are quickly snapped up due to high demand. So what is needed to close the gap between the diverse range of support available and its consistent use?
Above all, this requires concise information that addresses business needs and services that guide interested parties through every step of the application process. We offer both from a single source: the Magenta app "Meine Förderung" (My Funding) allows you to search through around 2,500 funding programmes yourself. The quick check, which you can also find here on our website, answers a few questions to determine whether there are funding opportunities for a specific project and which programmes are suitable for you. Both digital tools act as a compass and make the complex and confusing funding landscape easier to navigate. The results and information are the ideal basis for the next step: the actual application. Whether private or public, for digital innovations or your basic digital infrastructure: a wide variety of digitalisation-related purchases and projects are supported by government grants.
Private companies receive particularly extensive funding. The digitisation of small and medium-sized enterprises in particular is supported by the government: the funding programmes range from the digitisation of their internal processes and the modernisation of machinery to areas such as e-commerce and IT security. Often, both federal and state programmes are involved, resulting in particularly high funding amounts. The public sector also covers a wide range of topics, including health and education and their further development in the digital age. The topic of smart cities plays a special role here. The private and public sectors often work particularly closely together in this area. The focus is on modern mobility. Support is provided, for example, for digital strategies and the procurement of specific infrastructure components, such as charging stations for electric vehicles.
