Data storage Microsoft 365

When using the various Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) services, you can store your data and files that you do not store locally in your data centre or on a computer in the Microsoft Cloud. Which Microsoft data centre is used for storage depends on the location of your company and the Microsoft 365 services you use.

Since the beginning of 2020, most Microsoft 365 and Office 365 services for new German customers have been hosted in the new German data centres. They are always assigned to the geographical data centre region that corresponds to your billing address. However, not every Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) cloud service is available in every Microsoft data centre. For new German customers, the various services are currently hosted in the following regions:

Microsoft 365 services hosted in Germany

Exchange Online, Exchange Online Protection, Microsoft Teams, MyAnalytics, Office Online & Mobile, OneDrive for Business, OneNote Services, and SharePoint Online

Microsoft 365 services hosted in the European Union

Microsoft Forms, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Planner, Skype for Business, Stream, Whiteboard, and Yammer

Microsoft 365 services hosted in the United States

If you have been a customer with an Office 365 or Microsoft 365 subscription for some time, i.e. before the introduction of the German data centre region, you can find information about the data storage locations of your tenant via the Admin Centre under the menu item Settings | Organisation Profile | Data Storage Location Map.

For security reasons, Microsoft does not disclose the exact addresses of its data centres, but it does disclose the cities where they are located. The German data centres are located in Berlin and Frankfurt. The data centres for storage within the European Union are located in Austria (Vienna), Finland (Helsinki), France (Paris & Marseille), Ireland (Dublin) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam).
