What is software-defined networking?

Software-defined networking uses software-based controllers and APIs that centrally control the routing of data packets so that applications with different levels of criticality are automatically routed via the best and most secure communication path. Adjustments to routing and firewall rules or bandwidth allocations are also implemented automatically and centrally.

This is based on decoupling network intelligence (software) from network devices (hardware) and controlling them from the cloud. Compared to "old school" networks, where the logic was located in the devices, network services can be developed, tested and distributed more quickly with software-defined networking.

Since transmission paths are utilised optimally in software-defined networking, SDN is also more powerful and economical. This improvement is made possible by software-defined performance management.

Use cases for software-defined networking (SDN)

Data centres

SDN enables dynamic management of data centre resources, including virtualised servers and traffic management, to ensure optimal utilisation and performance.

Network automation

Companies can use SDN to automate their network operations, which speeds up service delivery and reduces human error.

Cloud services

For cloud providers, SDN enables flexible provisioning of network resources, making it easier to create and manage virtual networks for customers.

Network security

SDN can be used to centrally manage security policies, detect threats in real time and implement responsive measures.

Centralisation

Thanks to cloud-based control, software-defined networking allows network administrators to manage the entire network via a central interface . This greatly simplifies network management. Whether it's onboarding new applications, end devices or entire locations, all these processes can be controlled centrally at the click of a mouse. Software-defined networking also provides a comprehensive overview of the network.

Automation

Hundreds of network elements, thousands of apps, finely defined routing policies: network monitoring and troubleshooting with traditional analysis tools is reaching its limits and carries the risk of errors and undetected security gaps. Software-defined networks use artificial intelligenceto analyse, detect anomalies and implement workarounds or repairs. The result: network administration is relieved and sources of error are avoided.

Virtualisation

In conventional hardware networks, dedicated routers and switches are used to control network traffic. In contrast, software-defined networking allows you to virtualise and monitor it centrally. This allows, for example, different physical networks to be connected in a virtual network. It is also possible to create different virtual networks within a physical network.

Flexibility

Flexibility is essential in order to respond to new situations and compete in tomorrow's market. Software-defined networks clearly have an advantage here. This is because the central configuration of services and infrastructure in real time increases responsiveness of the network. The rollout of configuration changes can be done with just a few clicks for all network components. The flexible prioritisation of virtual resources also means optimisation of data flows in the network.

Safety

Security aspects are the main drivers of current network modernisation and transformation, as the threat situation is growing exponentially. Software-defined networking enables a holistic view of threats thanks to a central overview of the entire network. holistic view of threats. Security policies can be managed comprehensively and distributed automatically, ensuring that all network components are protected. Depending on security requirements, individual areas of the network can also be configured separately.
