At the end of the year, Microsoft 365 Copilot users can once again look forward to a host of new features and possibilities.

Since 1 December, Microsoft 365 Copilot Business, a new edition specifically designed for small and medium-sized businesses, has been available. The add-on for the business editions (Basic, Standard and Premium) of Microsoft 365 offers the familiar features of Microsoft 365 for greater productivity.

In addition, the following new features have been added:

More intelligence for users

• Work IQ with memory function: Copilot remembers contexts from previous conversations and provides more personalised responses.
• Excel with formula autocomplete: formulas are suggested based on context – faster, more reliable, fewer errors.
• PowerPoint with explanatory text and image editing: understand content, edit images and use brand assets directly – without switching tools.
• Copilot Notebooks: More context through automatic reference suggestions, now also available in OneNote and for students.

Better search & navigation

• Revised Copilot app with clear navigation, library for AI content and chat history.
• Copilot Search with AI views: Context-rich summaries, filters by people and sources, and access to previous Copilot chats.
• Consistent Copilot experience across Teams chats, channels, and meetings.
• Facilitator actively structures meetings: agenda tracking, tasks, recaps and automatic documents.
   

New specialised agents

• People, Learning, Workforce Insights & Surveys Agents provide targeted support in people management, learning, workforce analysis and surveys.
   

In October, Microsoft 365 Copilot was once again expanded with many interesting new features.

One new feature, for example, is Agent Mode in Word and Excel, which makes working with documents and data much more interactive. Instead of executing individual commands, Copilot plans, controls and checks entire work steps independently: in Word, content is created on a dialogue basis through queries, drafts and refinements, while in Excel, Copilot implements multi-step tasks such as data preparation, modelling or visualisation directly in the grid.

The September update brings many helpful updates for Microsoft 365 Copilot – with lots of new features. The most important new features are:

• Copilot Chat everywhere: Integrated directly into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote
• More context, better answers: New long-context model for very large documents
• Work smarter in Outlook: manage emails, appointments & attachments directly via Copilot
• Increased productivity: formula help in Excel, text optimisation in Word and PowerPoint, thread summaries in Teams
  Centralised content and search: Copilot Library, AI Views and context-rich search
• Powerful agents: meeting, channel, community and knowledge agents for greater automation
• Greater control and security: New Copilot Control System with agent reports & Purview integration
   

August also brought exciting updates for Microsoft 365 Copilot, with many features designed to increase productivity and security.

This gives administrators significantly greater transparency and control options: SharePoint agents can be managed centrally in the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre. This is complemented by improved cost management via pay-as-you-go capacities for Copilot Chat and detailed usage reports for Copilot Search.

Further innovations include:

• Secure AI with Microsoft Purview: Risky Copilot prompts and sensitive responses are detected and automatically linked to protective measures.
• Easier access for users: SharePoint Agents are available directly in Copilot and in the Teams App Store.
• More powerful Copilot Chat: Dynamic model selection with GPT-5, new tools menu (e.g. Researcher, Analyst, Designer).
• Greater contextual understanding: Copilot takes email attachments into account, analyses images in documents and creates presentations from ideas.
• Creative AI for everyone: image generation and editing now also available without a Copilot licence in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.
   

With GPT-5, Microsoft is bringing the most powerful OpenAI generation to date directly to Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio. GPT-5 combines speed for simple queries with deep, context-based thinking for complex tasks.

What's new?

• Intelligent model selection: Copilot automatically recognises whether a query requires quick answers or deeper analysis and selects the appropriate GPT-5 model.
• Work better in context: Whether you need short summaries or in-depth assessments, Copilot uses web and company data (e.g. emails, documents, meetings) to deliver tailored results.
• Copilot Studio integration: GPT-5 is also available for customised AI agents to automate complex business processes.
• Licence benefits: Users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence now receive prioritised access and higher response quality.
• Complementary to "Researcher": While GPT-5 is optimised for everyday tasks, Researcher remains the first choice for particularly in-depth, research-intensive projects.

July also brought exciting updates for Microsoft 365 Copilot, Teams, SharePoint and Edge – with many features that make productivity and collaboration even more intuitive.

Microsoft 365 Copilot

• Interpreter in Teams: Real-time language translation for nine languages (including English, German, Japanese) directly in meetings. Two hours per month are included in the Copilot subscription.
• Copilot without recording: In sensitive Teams calls, Copilot can be used without creating transcripts or recordings – ideal for discreet meetings.
• Copilot Notebooks on the go: Notebooks can now be opened and edited on the go in the Microsoft 365 Mobile App.
• More file context: Copilot Notebooks now support up to 100 files as a basis.
• Excel in PowerPoint: Presentations can be created directly from Excel data.
• Audio overview in Word: Documents can be listened to as podcast-like summaries (in English).
• „Recent Prompts“ in Word: Recent entries are displayed directly in the interface so that ideas can be quickly revisited.

Microsoft Edge

• Rewrite with Copilot: Texts can be rephrased directly in the browser in a context-sensitive manner – with a choice of tone and format.

SharePoint & Teams

• Agents in SharePoint & Teams: AI agents can now be used directly in SharePoint web parts, Teams group chats and channels – for fast, context-sensitive support.

In June, numerous new features were released for Microsoft 365 Copilot, making everyday work even more efficient:

ContextIQ in Copilot Chat: Integrate context directly – use the slash command (/) or the "Add content" button to attach files, meetings, people and even third-party data sources such as Salesforce or ServiceNow to prompts. New: Select meeting series, search for files using filters, proactive context suggestions as you type.

Mobile app updates: Deep Reasoning Agents Researcher and Analyst on iOS (Android to follow), Copilot notebooks for on the go, and new Create features for stories, infographics, and templates.

Copilot in Edge: Send queries directly from the address bar to Copilot, use agents in the browser, and summarise web pages instantly with a right-click.

Copilot in Outlook: Schedule meetings via chat, prepare for meetings on mobile devices, summarise attachments, and enjoy a new sidebar experience in classic Outlook.

Copilot Chat: More realistic image generation, OCR for scanned PDFs, longer summaries of large files, and multi-turn image interactions.

Copilot Memory: Preferred working methods and recurring topics are automatically remembered to make responses more personal and efficient – they can be customised or deleted at any time.

Other highlights: call summaries in Teams Phone, new .pagefile extension for Copilot Pages, Copilot Notebooks in OneNote, integration of brand images in PowerPoint, formula explanations directly in Excel, and the new Microsoft 365 Copilot app for macOS.

These updates make Copilot even more powerful as your personal, context-aware AI assistant – whether in your browser, Office apps, on mobile or on your desktop.

May 2025 also saw exciting innovationsthat make Copilot even more powerful and versatile – from notebooks in OneNote to smarter presentations in PowerPoint.

• Copilot Notebooks: Bundle content from notes, documents, websites or meetings, update it in real time and generate relevant actions or insights directly from it. Even audio summaries with two moderators are possible.

Edge

• Search summarisation: When using CTRL+F, Copilot displays a summary directly in the page area showing how the search term is used on the page. 

Word

• Citing made easy: Copilot automatically inserts source references into created texts.
• Dynamic document snapshots: brief to detailed summaries plus insights and statistics.
• Coaching function: Suggestions for improvement in style, structure and impact, including one-click application.

PowerPoint

• More sources: Presentations can now access up to 5 files, including PDF and TXT.
• Work safely: Narrative Builder creates new files without overwriting originals.
• Quick start: Create presentations directly from the Backstage view.

Copilot Chat

• Automated processes: Save and schedule recurring and customised prompts.
• New chat archive: Search conversations by date or keyword.
• Better file integration

In April 2025, Microsoft also introduced enhancements and improvements for Microsoft 365 Copilot, which are designed to make everyday life much easier for users:

• For example, the Copilot app has been completely redesigned: when users launch it for the first time, they are given an introduction to the most important tools, files and functions. It is now easier to use – for example, the new keyboard shortcut Win + C provides quick access to Copilot Chat.
• With People, Copilot gains an intelligent data model that identifies employees' skills based on their activities (meetings, documents, chats). This makes it easier for users to find colleagues with the right skills, and gives managers a better overview of strengths and development opportunities within the company.
• Copilot Pages is becoming more mobile: content can now not only be viewed and edited on the go, but new pages can also be created directly. Another new feature is the ability to transfer created content to a Word document with a single click for further editing or sharing.
• A new feature allows documents, meetings and files to be automatically converted into audio summaries – similar to a podcast. You can customise the style and length and choose whether to use one or two speaker voices. This feature will be integrated into OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, Word and Copilot Notebooks.

Further improvements in the applications

• Outlook: Copilot now provides even better assistance in prioritising your inbox.
• Word: Advanced functions for document creation and optimisation.
• Excel: New options for creating tables and analysing text.
• PowerPoint: Simplified creation of presentations.
• Teams: Improved language support and content analysis.

March 2025 also saw number of exciting new features that improve the way agents interact with Copilot and use it in various Microsoft applications.

Administrators may find these two points particularly interesting:

• New Copilot data source in Microsoft Purview Data Explorer: Starting in April 2025, administrators will be able to use Microsoft Purview Data Explorer to track whether content from Copilot queries or responses matches sensitive information marked with sensitivity or retention labels.
• Pay-as-you-go billing for Copilot chat agents: Admins can set up billing for Copilot chat agents directly in the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre without having to access the Power Platform Admin Centre.

Users of Microsoft 365 Copilot can look forward to these new features, among others:

• Teams calls without recording: Users can use Copilot during Teams calls without creating a transcript or recording. This is particularly helpful for sensitive conversations. The feature is scheduled to be rolled out in May.
• Rich content and flexibility in Copilot pages: Users can add a variety of content such as diagrams, code blocks and interactive tables to Copilot pages and edit them collaboratively with colleagues. This feature will be launched in April.
• Web data in Excel: Copilot enables web data to be integrated directly into Excel, for example to automatically import information such as exchange rates.
• Outlook automations: In Outlook, users can utilise Copilot agents to automate business processes.
• Image analysis in OneDrive: Copilot now helps extract information from images in OneDrive by allowing users to ask questions directly about the image content.

February 2025 also saw exciting new features, particularly improving the management and use of Copilot in various Microsoft applications.

New policy for Copilot access in Teams meetings: Administrators now have the option to specifically control access to Copilot for B2B users in multi-tenant organisations. This setting can be configured in the Teams Admin Centre or via PowerShell and is enabled by default.

Users can also look forward to a range of new features.

Advanced functions in Excel

• Python support: Copilot can now generate Python code and insert it directly into Excel to facilitate data analysis and visualisation.
• Graph-based answers: Copilot can draw on information from other company sources and provide context-related answers.
• New prompts: Users receive suggestions for formulas, charts, and pivot tables to analyse their data more efficiently.

Improved summaries and coaching in Word

• Document summaries can now contain up to 1.5 million words – a significant increase from the previous limit of 80,000 words.
• The coaching feature now offers even more comprehensive suggestions for optimising texts and supports more languages, including German, English, Spanish and Chinese.

New features in PowerPoint

• Translations: Copilot can translate entire PowerPoint presentations into 40 different languages while maintaining the design.
• Text optimisation: Texts on slides can now be reworded, shortened or corrected in a more professional manner.
• Speaker notes: Copilot automatically generates speaker notes for presentations to facilitate preparation and delivery.

You can now also upload images via Copilot Chat and have them analysed. You will receive a detailed description and any text contained in the image will also be recognised. This is possible via Microsoft 365 Copilot, Teams, Outlook or the Edge sidebar.

Microsoft 365 Copilot will continue to receive regular updates with new features in new year. Here are the latest updates from January:

The most important new feature is that Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat now also offers AI-based functions free of charge to users of Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard and Premium. This is chat environment based on GPT-4. It can be used to create images or text, for example, or to carry out research. This new feature enables companies to use AI in a straightforward manner without any prior commitment. While Copilot Chat offers basic AI support, Microsoft 365 Copilot remains the more comprehensive solution with advanced features such as email summaries, meeting reviews and Excel data analysis.

In addition, there are the following new features:

• Copilot in Admin Centre: IT administrators receive personalised summaries of trends and insights in key administrative areas, as well as a simplified view of Message Centre posts tailored to their tenant's configuration.
• Copilot Analytics: With the new usage intensity and retention reports, admins can monitor the frequency and intensity of Copilot usage and compare groups with each other.
• Copilot Prompt Gallery App: A central hub for users to discover, save, and share relevant prompts, accelerating the adoption of Copilot in organisations.
• New Copilot integration in Excel: A Copilot icon in the Excel worksheet provides quick access to features such as formula suggestions and data visualisations.
• Copilot in Outlook: Improved writing features, including the ability to rewrite text passages and revise them more quickly. Mac users can now also interact with Copilot Chat.
• PowerPoint improvements: Copilot now assists with the creation of presentations by incorporating text from Word documents and summarising longer presentations (up to 40,000 words).
• Text selection and file referencing in Word: Users can now address Copilot directly with selected text in Word and access recently used files to create new documents more quickly.

With the Wave 2 Spring Release, Microsoft is expanding the Copilot Control System (CCS) with new features that help IT administrators use Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents securely, cost-effectively and transparently.

Security and governance

Administrators gain comprehensive insights into agent behaviour via the new Data Security Posture Management for AI module in Microsoft Purview. These include:

• Identification of risks when processing sensitive data
• Monitoring and controlling agent usage with regard to unethical or inappropriate applications
• Blocking sensitive data for certain agents

A central dashboard provides a clear overview of where security gaps exist and how they can be closed in a targeted manner.

Measurement and reporting

New analytics capabilities help organisations better measure the impact of Copilot agents:

• Message Consumption Report (in public preview from May 2025): Provides insights into agent message consumption, including time series and details at agent and user level.
• Agent Usage Report (in public preview from June 2025): Provides a comprehensive overview of agent usage, differentiated between licensed and unlicensed users.
• Copilot Studio Agent Report in Viva Insights: Already available and soon to be expanded to include customised business impact reports that link agent usage to business metrics such as ticket reduction or revenue growth.

Management and control

To effectively manage the agent lifecycle, the management functions in the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre are being further expanded:

• Improved overview and control of agent inventories,
• Easy activation, deactivation or blocking of agents for specific users or groups,
• Export options and PowerShell support for mass management,

These new features provide administrators with greater control, transparency, and security when introducing and scaling Copilot solutions in enterprises.

At the end of the year, Microsoft also introduced various new features for Microsoft 365 Copilot. These are the most important updates:

Greater transparency and customisation for administration teams

• Release notes for Copilot: Admins can now access monthly updated release notes that provide an overview of new features and improvements. This transparency is intended to simplify the planning and management of Microsoft Copilot.
• Customisable content in Viva Learning: From January 2025, Viva Learning will enable the customisation of Copilot Academy. Microsoft-curated learning paths can be duplicated and adapted to the needs of the organisation.
• New reports in Copilot Analytics: Viva Pulse offers survey templates for analysing Copilot usage, with results fed directly into the Copilot dashboard. Sales managers can also create detailed reports on Copilot for Sales usage in Viva Insights to track trends and task participation.

More efficient tools for users

• Intelligent note management with OneNote: Copilot allows users on Mac and iPad to summarise, rewrite and structure notes. The Quick Actions feature on the desktop interface offers additional options such as creating to-do lists or rewriting content.
• Fast data cleaning in Excel: The new "Clean Data" feature detects inconsistencies and suggests solutions. Microsoft Copilot also recognises patterns in data and suggests appropriate formulas. These features have been available for Excel on the web since December and are expected to be available on Windows desktop in January.
• More dynamic interactions in Word and PowerPoint: Copilot can read out responses in the chat window, which increases interactivity. Users can also insert images into chats, analyse them or extract text from them – for seamless working directly in documents or presentations.
• Smart summaries in Teams: In Microsoft Teams, spontaneous meetings such as "Meet now" calls or chat-based meetings can now also be summarised automatically. Notes, tasks and mentions make it easier to follow up on such ad hoc meetings.

In November, Microsoft once again unveiled a host of exciting new features for Microsoft 365 Copilot. Here are the most important updates:

• Copilot Analytics: Copilot Analytics was unveiled at Microsoft Ignite 2024, enabling IT and business leaders to measure the usage and business value of Microsoft 365 Copilot. With Viva Insights, predefined reports can be customised or created from scratch. The launch is planned for early 2025.
• Copilot dashboard: New metrics such as Intelligent Recap in Microsoft Teams or chat usage in Word, Excel and PowerPoint provide detailed insights. Administrators can also monitor Copilot usage with Enterprise Data Protection. These features are expected to be available in December.
• Improved data access management in SharePoint: With Site Access Review, IT administrators can delegate the review of data access reports to website owners who are more familiar with local sharing.
• Enhanced usage reports in the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre: A new dashboard displays active Copilot users by app (e.g. Word, Teams) and trends over different time periods.
• Personalised designs in Outlook: Copilot in Outlook enables the creation of individual designs generated by AI. In addition, users can switch between work-based and web-based contexts for Business Chat in the mobile app.
• Agents in SharePoint: SharePoint now enables the creation of specialised agents that evaluate content in a targeted manner and make it available for business decisions.
• Advanced features in Word and PowerPoint: In Word, users can now include up to ten references and create longer prompts. Copilot also makes it easier to insert generated, stock or branded images from SharePoint. PowerPoint has been enhanced with AI-powered layouts and topic-specific templates.
• Business Chat: Business Chat now supports longer entries and context-sensitive suggestions. Users can also summarise content from web browsers and PDFs directly.
• Copilot Prompt Gallery: The new Prompt Gallery allows you to save, share and discover prompts, including those for agents. New collections for customer service, IT and legal have been added.

In October 2024, updates for Microsoft 365 Copilotwere introduced – for both administrators and users. Take a look at the following new features, for example:

• Administrators can control web search separately from other functions. This means that web search can be specifically disabled in work mode, while remaining active in web mode.
• Microsoft 365 Copilot now supports twelve additional languages, including Bulgarian, Croatian, and Vietnamese, bringing the total number to 42 languages.

Users will also receive these new features:

• Users can see the web search queries that Copilot used to generate its answers. This is intended to increase transparency.
• Copilot Lab now offers special prompt collections for areas such as sustainability, consumer goods and non-profit organisations.
• Loop: Users can add files such as Word documents or Excel spreadsheets to their prompts and view summaries directly in Loop.
• Outlook: Copilot assists in preparing for meetings by providing a summary of important files and information.
• Word: Copilot now offers options for text refinement and table creation with new formatting options.

In September 2024, updates for Microsoft 365 Copilot were introduced again – for both administrators and users. Take a look at the following new features, for example:

• The new User Enablement Toolkit helps organisations promote the use of Copilot. It includes customisable communication templates and role-based examples to facilitate the adoption of Copilot.
• Microsoft Copilot Academy is now available to all users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence and offers learning resources to improve your Copilot skills.
• IT administrators and companies can now specify when Copilot is available in Teams meetings or disable the feature entirely.

Users can also look forward to these new features:

• Image generation and agents in Business Chat: In Business Chat, it is now possible to generate images and use pre-built agents – ideal for visual representations directly in the workflow.
• Integration with Outlook and Loop: Copilot now supports interactive business chats in Outlook and private chats in Loop, improving collaboration and brainstorming.
• Enhancements in Word and OneNote: In Word, longer content can now be referenced, and suggestions for getting started can be displayed directly in blank documents. In OneNote, handwritten and typed notes can be analysed simultaneously.

Microsoft has unveiled the next major update for Copilot in Microsoft 365. Wave 2 brings impressive new features, especially for SharePoint and OneDrive. These enhancements aim to further increase user productivity. Here is an overview of the most important announcements:

Copilot Pages

Microsoft introduces Copilot Pages, a dynamic, persistent workspace designed for collaboration with AI. Teams can work together in real time with Copilot and add content from various data sources.

Copilot Agents

In addition, Copilot Agents were introduced, which can automate and execute business processes. They range from simple assistants that perform tasks to more complex autonomous agents. With the new Agent Builder, users can easily create their own Copilot Agents.

Copilot in SharePoint

SharePoint is becoming a central content management tool that supports users with the aforementioned Copilot agents. These AI-powered agents enable users to answer questions, create summaries and analyse content from SharePoint.

Copilot in SharePoint can also design entire pages based on text instructions. Features such as branding, layouts and animations can be added using natural language to create appealing websites.

Copilot in OneDrive

New features in OneDrive make it possible to summarise, compare and search files for content more quickly. With AI support, users can ask questions about files without having to open them and extract important information more quickly. These features are expected to be available to all users from the end of September 2024.

Further improvements to Copilot for Microsoft 365

The capabilities of Copilot in the various Microsoft 365 apps are being further improved. New features are being introduced, particularly in Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook, such as the following:

• Copilot is now officially available in Excel, offering advanced data analysis capabilities, including Python integration.
• In PowerPoint, the Narrative Builder helps you quickly create initial drafts for presentations.
• Microsoft Teams now offers enhanced meeting summaries that include both spoken content and chats.
• In Outlook, Copilot helps you manage your email inbox more efficiently by prioritising important messages and creating summaries.

In August 2024, interesting updates for Copilot for Microsoft 365 were announced once again. These innovations affect Outlook, Word, Teams and Forms, among others. The following features, which could make your work even easier, are particularly noteworthy:

• Expanded language support: Starting in September, Copilot for Microsoft 365 will support 12 additional languages, including Bulgarian, Greek, and Vietnamese. Improvements have also been made to various language variants, such as German (Switzerland) and French (Canada).
• Dashboard integration with Viva Glint and Viva Pulse: Survey results on Copilot from Viva Glint or Pulse will now be displayed directly in the Copilot dashboard. This provides a better overview of employee satisfaction with the Copilot rollout.
• New chat features: Improvements in Outlook and Teams enable advanced search functions in email archives and group chats. The text size for entries has also been increased to up to 16,000 characters.
• Easier content insertion in Word: Copilot offers advanced options for reformatting tables, lists and other structures. Already available on the web, coming soon to desktop and Mac.
• Support for quiz solutions in Forms: You can use Copilot to generate step-by-step solutions to quiz questions, helping participants to self-correct and learn.
• Time-based summaries in Teams: Copilot in Teams now allows you to efficiently summarise chat histories using time references such as 'yesterday' or 'last month'.

July 2024 also saw exciting new features for Copilot in Microsoft 365. These can be found in Excel, Outlook, Word and Forms, among others – the following may be of particular interest to you:

Improved data analysis with Copilot in Excel

• Preview of suggested improvements: Copilot describes planned changes and displays a preview with a button to accept the changes, making it easier for users to decide whether they want to implement the change.
• Complex conditional formatting: Support for advanced formatting rules, such as highlighting rows based on a combination of inputs, e.g. "Highlight rows where 'Priority' is 'Critical' and 'Status' is not 'Done'."
• Summarising column data: In future, users will also be able to use a single formula to summarise the data from an entire column in one cell, instead of obtaining an individual result for each row.

Write and organise emails faster with Copilot:

• Composing emails: Using the chat box on the right-hand side, Copilot can create email drafts by capturing the context of the current email and drafting a reply based on that, e.g. 'Reply to this email and confirm...'.
• Organising emails: With simple instructions such as "Move all emails from beispiel@test.de to my tasks folder," Copilot can sort emails into different folders.

Improved document summarisation in Copilot in Word:

• Summarising longer documents: Copilot can now summarise documents of up to 80,000 words.

Creating quizzes with Copilot in Forms:

• Automatic quiz generation: Copilot helps you quickly create quizzes and automatically adds correct answers based on the user's input.

Microsoft has expanded the functionality of Copilot for Microsoft 365 with a number of exciting new features in June 2024. These can be found in SharePoint, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Loop, among others.

Efficient rewriting of content in SharePoint

Copilot now enables quick rewriting of texts on SharePoint pages, including adjustment of tone and text length.
